chromium-browser removed from testing

Ok, this happened, chromium-browser was removed from testing and will not be included in Debian squeeze.

Some days ago (before the hard freeze) I contacted the release team and asked about a possible inclusion of Chromium 6 in squeeze. The main reason of this request is that in April there was at least one major refactoring of the SVG code (webkit). The internal webkit copy is too outdated in chromium 5, and backporting any future SVG security patches (and unfortunately the story says they are frequent) is very hard.

I got no answer, and after one week of silence and the hard freeze announcement, I realized that chromium 5 is not supportable and decided to upload chromium 6 in unstable (It was already in experimental). I asked the Release Team to unblock chromium-browser 6.0.472.53~r57914-3 or remove chromium-browser 5.0.375.127~r55887-1 from testing.

Well, after one hour they removed chromium-browser from testing.

I failed, my efforts to get chromium in Squeeze were in vain. Debian failed, a modern and very appreciated web browser will not be included in our next stable release.

Update:  The relase team unblocked chromium, squeeze will have chromium!

Don’t take it too hard. I voluntarily removed Hadoop and HBase from Squeeze since both projects are too fast moving targets.
But I think nobody should have problems to run both projects via backports.
I believe backports would maybe even be the better option for any webbrowser then stable?

The Debian project wonders why people are moving away to other Distributions like Ubuntu. Ubuntu has had Chromium in stable releases for some time now. It looks like it could be years before Debian gets it.

I almost agree with you, Giuseppe. This is indeed a failure for Debian: however just don’t we forget that the backports service has been made “official” in the last days. Everyone will be able to have chromium in squeeze with just a little effort ;-)

“Modern and much appreciated” software is generally not considered suitable for Debian stable, AFAICS. The few remaining users seem to actually appreciate the fact that Debian only ships obsolete versions which are usually already EOLed upstream in its stable release.

“Go away and install Ubuntu already” is the message that Debian effectively sends out to everyone else.

Ubuntu has Chromium, but do they support it for security updates? If not, that would be a much bigger failure than Debian. People wanting an up to date web browser, are better of using backports or testing anyway.

Well this was expected — If backports carries the latest stable then I’m happy. Hope the person in charge of this package realizes it’s pretty volatile in that Google/Chromium have moved to a pretty aggressive update cycle for future milestones. So maybe volatile is more appropriate?

Supporting chromium has been a challenge for everyone. Here are some of the issues we’ve encountered in Ubuntu: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/technical-board/2010-August/000459.html

and iirc the person trying to support it in Fedora (Tom Calloway) has a laundry list of issues someplace, which I can’t seem to find right now.

Any chance you’d still be open to providing updates in experimental (or unstable – I’m not sure how much the “only upload bugfixes to unstable during freeze” policy applies when a package has been removed from testing) until such time as Squeeze releases and/or a more permanent arrangement can be made? I already run a mixed system I’d rather not have to go back to the Ubuntu PPA that I was using before chromium-browser made it into Debian – I imagine there are others in a similar situation.
Thanks for your work packaging this.

That is only natural. We Debian users and developers should stop thinking that releasing stuff in stable is the “normal” state of things, and embrace the fact that this kind of software will never be “released” satisfactorily.

The whole problem is the idea that what is not “stable” is “unstable” or “testing”…

You have not failed if the goal was something impossible. Debian is the universal OS, but there are rules to the universe! We should change to “the universal and possible distribution”. Debian, the best-effort distribution!

We just happen to have a different set of priorities. In Debian, having the latest piece of junk has less priority than the overall stability and security of the system.

Currently chromium is a too fast moving target for Debian, or any distribution doing real stable releases, for that matter (and that means RHEL or SLED, not Ubuntu). If Google cannot, as an upstream, provide support for their software for more than 6 months after it is out, there is nothing that distributors can do.

Fast moving targets like Chromium are not suitable for a Stable release. I value a Stable release that lasts around two years. Others think five years is too short. How would you support Chromium for that time period?

I would much rather see things like Chromium in volatile. It is a very quickly changing target and much more suitable in volatile than anyplace else. I would rather see it in volatile over backports. Volatile is the right place for it.

The right decision was made. The ultimate goal is to provide an operating system with a few bugs as possible. With as fast as a moving target as Chromium is, getting bugs triaged, tested and fixed before the next release comes out is a challenge-and-a-half. Unless you just want to trust the upstream releases to be fixing all the bugs.

Debian stable is about stability, and I was worried with Chromium adding potential bugs and instability to the operating system. Hopefully, we will have had enough time to get in into Wheezy bug-free.

Both Firefox and Chrome have a life cycle which is less than the normal 3 year life cycle of a Debian release.

Even if chromium 6 were included in squeeze, 7 would come out next year some time. Then what? The same story is true for Firefox as well (FF 3.0 has EOL’d and 3.0 is in lenny).

If people *have* to resort to using -backports after a year and a half or a year of a stable release, then what is the point of inclusion in a stable release?

Debian is very appreciated because is stable! Chromium 6 was released too late for stable release… stop. You want Chromium? You can simply add sid repository and use you favorite browser ;-) which is the problem? but if Chromium 6 has some critical bugs is your problem, not a problem for Debian Teams.

Certainly this is no surprise. This has always been the reason why people have moved away from Debian.

On the other hand, can we not simply install Chromium from a third-party repository once the latest Debian is released?

I confess that I don’t use Debian or any *.deb-based distro, but the same problem exists in RPM-based distros, as well.
